PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF INTERNET ADDICTION AMONG FACULTY OF NURSING STUDENTS AT PORT SAID UNIVERSITY

Abstract

Background. The internet addiction has numerous physical and psychological effects on health of the student’s faculty. Aim: Determine the physical and psychological effects of internet addiction among faculty of Nursing students at Port Said University. Setting: Faculty of Nursing, Port Said University. Subjects and Method: Design: A descriptive design was employed. Subjects: A sample of 124 students from the four academic years at faculty of Nursing, Port Said University, were involved. Tools: Three tools were used tool I. Internet use assessment sheet, tool II the Internet Addiction Test (IAT) to assess internet addiction. Tool III a measure of severity of physical and psychological symptoms as a result of using the internet scale. Results. The study results showed that headache represented a percent score of 60.48 ± 26. 44, while sleep problems represented percent score of 54.19 ± 27.20. The psychological problems percent score 43.68 ± 29.19.  Furthermore, the moderate using the internet was 39.5% among the studied sample. Conclusion: The present study proved that headache, sleep problems and psychological symptoms (fear - depression -anxiety) respectively were the highest sever symptoms resulted from using the internet. There is significant relation between total scores of psychological symptoms, internet using scale and time of using internet. Recommendations: Improve attitude and knowledge regarding physical and/or psychological health hazards of using mobile phone and internet addiction.
