Awareness, Health Beliefs, and Self-Efficacy Regarding Osteoporosis among Port Said Female University Students

Abstract

Background: Osteoporosis is a debilitating disease commonly linked to early mortality and considerable health complications, including fractures, bone deformities, and a reduced quality of life. The condition is more widespread in Arab countries, with rates of prevalence varying from 8% to 40%. Aim: The objective of this study was assessment of awareness, health beliefs, and self-efficacy in terms of osteoporosis amid Port Said Female University students. Subjects and Method: The research design implemented to this study was a descriptive cross-sectional. Setting: The research study was done at three faculties of the University of Port Said governorate in Egypt. Subjects: A simple random sample of 227 female students of Port Said University. Study tools: A three tools were chosen to gather the data Tool I: A Self-Administered Student Questionnaire to gather data about Female Students' demographic characteristics and osteoporosis Knowledge, Tool II: The Osteoporosis Health Belief Scale, Tool III: The Osteoporosis Self-Efficacy Scale. Results: This study found that female students had an overall knowledge mean score of 13.64±2.72 and a total health belief model score of 148.2±9.26 regarding osteoporosis. Additionally, 48.9% of the students exhibited high self-efficacy levels. A significant positive correlation was also observed between osteoporosis health beliefs and self-efficacy. Conclusion: The findings showed that the female students had moderate overall knowledge of osteoporosis. Additionally, they scored high in most subscales and in overall health beliefs.Recommendations: Further research is needed to examine how demographic, behavioral, and social factors affect calcium intake and exercise across different cultures.
