Abstract

Background: Bronchial asthma is a highly prevalent chronic respiratory disease which affects more than 300 million persons all over the world with a mortality rate about 250,000 annually. Improvement of clinical outcomes by effective utilization of self-management behaviors has been studied for patients with bronchial asthma. Aim: This study aims to evaluate the effect of an educational program regarding self-care management behaviors for patients with bronchial asthma. Subject and method: A Quasi-experimental design was used in outpatient clinics at Al-masah El-bahary hospital. A purposive sample of 103 asthmatic patients was included in the study. Data was collected through Asthma self-care management behaviors for adults questionnaire. Results: there was a statistically significant improvement in all dimensions of asthma self-care management behaviors after the program implementation. Conclusion: the study results concluded that implementation of the asthma training program was associated with improvement in the use of medication, how to deal with asthma attacks, prevent a recurrent asthma attack, avoidance of the triggers for bronchial asthma, and the use of an inhaler. Recommendation: Promotion and enhancement of the self-care management to the patient through showing a picture about triggers, allowed foods, and follow up should be continued after termination of the treatment through the rehabilitation program.
